This document is
intended to explain the process by which the DMG arrived at its approval recommendation.
Agile Stone Systems' Parkdale Project applicationwas found complete and considered filed with the
Division on July 8, 1997. The application proposes surface mining of gravel, granite, quamed
aggregate, and quarried sandstone at a site located 10 miles west of Canon City, Colorado, in an area
just upstream of the confluence of the Arkansas River and Tallahassee Creek. The project area is
adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad which runs along the north side of the river channel. A
proposed 54.8-acre gravel extraction azea is located between the river and Tallahassee Creek. A
64.3-acre granite quarry and 3-acre sandstone quarry aze located on the opposite side (north) of the
creek. The granite and gravel extraction areas aze to have their own separate plant and stockpile
areas. The operator intends to ship rock products by rail and plans a railroad loop in the gravel plant
area and a rail spur to the granite quarry. Both are to be connected to the Union Pacific Railroad.
Two bridges aze proposed to be constructed over Tallahassee Creek to carry a road to the sandstone
quarry and the rail spur to the granite quarry.
The surface and mineral rights aze owned by the applicant.
Objections
The Division received objections from the following individuals and organizations during the initial
public comment period.
O~ector
Susan Steers
David Burch, Echo Canyon River Expeditions
Joe Greiner, Wilderness Aware
Dated
7/25/97
8/11/97 faxed
8/1/97
Date Received
8/ 1 /97
8/14/97 original
8/4/97
