Doc Date:1y1112001 II I III III I II IIII III
sss
• S/G ~ 3.5 ROAD9
3.5.1 ROAD CONSTRIICTION AND MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT
Roads will be constructed using bulldozers, scrapers, graders and
water trucks. Bulldozers will be used for short pushes with scrapers
handling material which must be conveyed longer distances. Water trucks
and graders will be used for finish work and continued maintenance.
3.5.9 CON9TAUCTION MSTHOD9
Roads will be designed for safe use by maintaining the lowest possible
gradient without use of switchbacks or hairpin turns. The majority of new
roads constructed are built on spoils, with the exception of one light use
road on natural ground.
The light use road is used to access Trout Creek for obtaining water
• for dUSt control. The final placement of the road has been field designed
and was dependent upon the as-built configuration of the sedimentation
pond and on-site topography. The filial design and construction was
performed in accordance with CMLRD Rule 4.03.3(3). Since this road is
designed to cross the north diversion ditch, a riprapped low water crossing
will be maintained at the crossing location. The location of this road is
shown on Exhibit 3.5-1.
The location of all haulage, access and lighty use road corridors are
shown on Exhibit 3.5-1. A complete description of all roads is provided in
Section 3.6.2.1.
Haulroad and access road construction begins after the centerline and
slope of the roads are surveyed and marked. Bulldozers and scrapers create
the cuts and fills required to bring the road to the design grade. The
materials used as fill will be void of coal or vegetative matter.
Compaction of fills vary in accordance with lift thickness. At final
grade, haulage and access roads are compacted using equipment that exerts
high-bearing pressure. Soft areas in the road bed are removed, refilled
and compacted until a substantial road base is created. Roads are
. surfaced, crowned and recompacted. All haulroads and access roads are
Mid-term '99 3.5-1 September 15, 1999
