III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
. Doc Date:1211112001
J ~'/ 2.04.3 General Requirements: Site Description and Land Use
The area which GEC Minerals, Inc. plans to mine during the next
five years exhibits two basic land use types. Grassland and wild-
life habitat currently exist in the areas which have not previously
been disturbed by either surface or underground mining techniques.
However, as stated within this application, this area has previously
been mined by both surface and underground methods during the past
50 to 60 years. Current land use as has been determined by the
Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service is depicted on
Map No. 3, Land Use. As noted on this map, some of the area which
GEC Minerals, Inc. currently has under permit for its existing
operation has been utilized for mining activities for same time.
• Those areas which have previously been disturbed by other mining
operators, both surface and underground, will be treated as grassland.
These areas are designated as Mined Land on the Land Use Map, but
for reclamation purposes, will be utilized as grassland. Because
of the lack of information as to the pre-mining land use for these
areas, GEC Minerals, Inc. plans to treat these lands as rangeland
and, therefore, will attempt to analyze the pre-mining land use
accordingly. General history of the previous underground and
surface mining operations and their extent are found under Section
2.04.4 - Cultural and Historic Resource Information.
The areas which are designated as being grassland on the Land Use
Map are grazed by domestic animals during varying periods of the
year. GEC Minerals, Inc. currently controls the surface of the
permit area through a lease from The Corley Company. No current
available data indicates that this land use has changed within the
previous five years.
lJ
2.04-2
