KUIPER
State Engineer
TO: HARRIS SHERMAN, SECRETARY, MINED LAND RECLAMATION BOARD
FROM: DR. JERIS A. DANIELSON, DEPUTY STATE ENGINEER
SUBJECT: GREELEY SAND AND GRAVEL, WELD COUNTY, APPLICATION FOR
MINING AND RECLAMATION PERMIT
As requested by your office, we have reviewed the application for the above
application near Greeley on the Cache La Poudre River and the following
comments are presented for your consideration:
1. The water requirements of the operation such as those
related to dust control and gravel washing have not been
indicated. Water rights that would be used to supply
these needs have not been indicated.
2. The method of mining is not indicated. If the pit is to be
dewatered, the impact upon the alluvial water table and
surrounding wells must be evaluated.
3. The effect of evaporation from the 165 acres of water surface
to be created has not been considered. The water loss from
the Poudre River and South Platte River systems due to this
operation could provide irrigation water to 320 acres of
farmland. The owners of these irrigated lands do not have
any recourse available to them except the possibility of the
Mined Land Reclamation Board requiring the applicant to
provide replacement water to the river system in the amount
of the evaporation loss during times of demand. We realize
that this will not make any more water available, but it at
least permits those who wish to continue farming to do so
