I have also discussed this with Aaron Lindstrom, DWM.
The area to be included on this mine, according to the DMG maps and to a mine operator that I met with
this morning, includes only sand hills that are currently spazsely vegetated with grasses. A citizen has
expressed concern that the map that she was supplied with includes the creek bottom and would impact
many of the trees that line the waterway. In a telephone conversation with Mr. Robert Flemming, he told
me that there would be no trees impacted by the operation. When I compazed the maps that I was
supplied with to the map that [he citizen faxed me, I discovered a discrepancy. The citizen's map
indicated that the mine would run all the way to 64`" Street, which is approximately 900' south of the i
southern border depicted on the DMG-supplied maps. Impacting the trees may also impact nesting or ~
roosting raptors that may be using the gallery of trees.
I assume that there was an error on the map that was supplied to the citizen. If such an error does not
exist, and the mined area will extend south to 64'~ Street and include the waterway and trees, I wish to be
notified so that I can incorporate that into my comment letter.
The remainder of this letter is based upon the premise that the mined area is limited to the sand hills and
will not impact any trees.
We see little long-term wildlife impact that will result from the mining operation, and encourage
reestablishment of vegetation based on the NRCS recommended seed mix.
If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me at 303-659-7004, ext 116.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Greg E.
