SC$•CONS-5 ~
_b-~$ U. 5. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
r % FILE f.O DE CONS-7d-5 • • SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
INVENTORY & EVALUATION III'll'll~ll"II'll
OF LAND, WATER, AND RELATED RESOURCES
4~z miles east of
REQUESTED BY Dan Vader LOCATION Gunnison. Colorado 81230
ASSISTED BY Bruce Hanson DATE September 2'], 19y8
* ® INDIVIDUAL ^ GROUP ^ UNIT OF GOVERNMENT
SITUATION: Dan hae a gravel pit next to Tamichi Creek, 4yz miles east of
Gunnison. According to the Colorado State Mined Land Reclamation Board he
must have a reclamation plan for the area to implement after mining ceases.
This pit site is adjacent to the creek and is flooded annually. When this
happens, the excavated area is redharged with gravel that is later mined. The
area involved in this operation is about 1 to 2 acres.
SUGGESTED SOLUTION(S) In discassion with Dan and the Colo. Div, of Wildlife the
idea came up of reclaiming this area to fish and wildlife habitat. The followi
is a plan of what will be done to accomplish this. First, the bank of the creek will
be built np to form a dike. This xill allow water to pond up in the excavated area
and will also prevent annual flooding damage from the creek. The dike will be about
5 ft. high at the deepest point, about 150 ft. long, and it will have an 8 ft. top
width and 214:1 side slopes. The average fill will be about 3 ft. This dike will
tie in to the higher ground that alreadv surrounds 2/3 of the excavated area. Second,
the slopes of the dike will be seeded with Reeds Canarx grass at 4 lba of pure live
seed per acre (doubled if need is broadcast) This will provide cover for waterfowl.
Third the pond can be stocked with trout This can be done by commercial stockers
or by individually catching some to stock with The water depth will be from 5 to 12 ft.
*Check appmpriafe cahyory over most of the area. The oxygen content of the water will be
recharged by subsarfaee flows,of gronndrater through gravel layers.:
