A III IIIIII III IIII III
- 999
+ UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
Monte Vista Field Office, P:0. Box 390, Monte Vista, CO 81144
May 13, 1980
SUBJECT: Gravel Pit Revegetation
Douglas O'Bannon Farm
T0: Jeff Rehberg
I have checked the gravel pit site located west of Del Norte, CO on the
Douglas O'Bannon farm.
Plants on site and in the vicinity include: rabbitbrush, western wheatgrass,
blue grama,'littleseed ricegrass, sleepygrass, needle-and-thread, squirrel-
tail, yucca, prickly-pear, and juniper along the western edge of the gravel
pit. These make up the majority of the existing plant community.
Recommendations for planting on disturbed areas at this site are as follows:
Russian Wildrye - Vinall Variety 10 lbs. per acre PLS*
Western Wheatgrass - Arriba or Barton Variety 16 lbs. per acre PLS*
Intermediate Wheatgrass - Amur Variety 10 lbs. per acre PLS*
* PLS = Pure Live Seed
The seeding rates are amounts of pure live seed if species is planted alone.
If you mix these and want equal amounts of each species then use about 1/3
of each seeding rate in the mix. If the seed is broadcast rather than drilled,
use twice the recommended rates. A firm seedbed should be prepared for seeding.
Due to the low precipitation in the area (about 12 inches per year) you need
to use the drought resistant species. This is the reason I have recommended
these grass species and I also believe that the seed is available from
commercial sources.
A one time fertilization of 18-46-0 in the seedbed would be beneficial to get
the seeding started. This should be applied at a rate of 300 lbs. per acre.
If barnyard manure is available for use, it would make an excellent additive
to the seedbed for holding moisture and improving fertility and tilth.
I would also recommend that the topsoil be saved for use on side slopes when
your project has been completed. Side slopes should not be steeper than 3 to 1.
This seeding can be done in the late fall just prior to snowfall. If the
seeding is done in spring you may lose seed due to strong winds. Mulching
should be considered for a spring time seeding.
• o
