~/~- III 1111111111111111 <br />3.3 8vdroloav and Geolow <br />• <br />3.3.1 Regional Geoloav <br />The proposed NCEC mine and loadout facility are located on the <br />upturned edge of Grand Hogback monocline, at the eastern ledge of <br />the Piceance Basin. Regional dips are southerly, between 30 and 70 <br />degrees. Faulting in the region is limited to small-displacement <br />normal faults which are generally perpendicular to the monoclinal <br />axis. <br />"Considering the magnitude of the Grand Hogback structure and <br />related features, known faulting within coal-bearing Mesaverde <br />Group rocks is remarkably minor." (Collins, 1976). Minor <br />north-south to northwest-southeast trending folds occur throughout <br />the region. <br />Sedimentary rock-units in the region include formations that are <br />• Pennsylvanian through Tertiary in age. Unconsolidated Quaternary <br />deposits, including alluvium, colluvium, and terraces, are as- <br />sociated with all major stream or river valleys in the region. <br />Figure 3.3-1 shows the generalized regional geology. More specific <br />geology is shown in Figure 3.3-2. <br />3.3.2 Site Geoloav <br />3.3.2.1 Mine Area <br />The geology of the mine site and adjacent areas is typical of the <br />regional geology. Rocks dip southerly into the Piceance Basin, <br />without interruption.
