KUIPER
State Engineer
TO: HARRIS D. SHERMAN, SECRETARY, MINED LAND RECLAMATION
FROM: DR. JERIS A. DANIELSON, DEPUTY STATE ENGINEER
SUBJECT: NIELSONS, INC. -ALEXANDER PIT, SAN MIGUEL COUNTY,
PERMIT NO. 76-32
As requested by your office, we have reviewed the application for a gravel
pit near Telluride. The following additional information is needed before we
can recommend approval of the proposed operation:
1. The Mining Plan indicates that water will be required for
sand and gravel washing. Water may also be required for
dust control on haul roads and in the crushing and screening
operation. What is the source of this water? How much
water will be consumed by these operations ?
2. The Water Resource Section of the application states that
a well (permit number 016607F) drilled by Animas Aggregates
"may be used in the future". This well was drilled in 1974
by Telluride Concrete Products after a court decree (W-2175)
was Issued for a conditional, 20 gpm well to be used for
a "ready-mix concrete plant". The State Engineer has
never received a statement of beneficial use for this well,
and the Nielson application is not for aready-mix operation.
It is doubtful, therefore, that this well could be used by
the applicant unless a "change-in-use" decree is issued by
the Division 4 Water Court and a statement of beneficial use
is filed with our office.
