Dept. of Natural Resor~cr
Denver, Co. 80203
Re: Federal Resources Renewal Application
Dear Board Members,
We have been contacted by Federal Resources Corporation as to
our thoughts on the disposition of the buildings and related facilities
at their Camp Bird Mine located in Ouray County, Colorado, if operations
are permanently discontinued.
This mine has been in existence for nearly 100 years. It has
consistently been an asset to the county for employment and taxes. There
have l8?n certain periods in time when due to ecomomic factors they
have been inactive.
We are of the opinion that these buildings and the tailings disposal
area are of a tremendous historical value and are definitly an asset
to our county. We wou13 not sanction the removal of any of these.
Ouray County, through its band Use Regulations, has designated
mining and its related appurtenances as a use by right. (Agriculture
has the same designation,)
Mining has and is now one of our primary economic bases. The Camp Hird
manager's house, Built in 1902~is one of the more interesting and well
known buildings in the area. It'c unique construction, with tower construction,
has been photographed by the majority of the tourists that have seen it.
With the interest in ghost towns, operating and abandoned mines in the
area, it would be a de:>ecration to require demolition of buildings and/or
restitution of land areas.
Sincerely,
~~ ~~,~ //
r
cc: Jim Points-Manager
HBW/man
~~~ ~ ~
"Warren E.
