~ - UNITED STATā¢DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTI⢠~ - III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE ..~

ti+~nmcr Gravel pit reclamation unr~: December 8, 1976
~'+: A9r, Chris ]4offsinger
Neilson~s Incorporated, Box 684
Dolores, Co 81323
As a follow-up to our phone conversation last night, I will try to clarify
my position on reclamation of the Animas Aggregates' gravel operation
near Telluride.
The information on the soils tracing that I settt to you last summer was
transferred from a soil map of a scale of about 2,64 inches per mile and
rras enlarged to a scale of about 8 inches per mile, There would prob-
ably be some amount of human error during the transfer of this informa-
tion from one scale to another, As far as the accuracy of the original
soil map, I feel pretty confident with it and its interpretations. Hotr-
ever, in mapping on a small scale (2,64"/mile) there may be inclusions of
other soils within each mapping unit, Determination of finer details re-
quires a specific on-site investigation.
As far as the reclamation effort itself is concerned, I feel that it
would be very impractical to haul topsoil material back into the area
designated as 802. I would suggest that ahand-cranked cyclone seeder
be used to broadcast the grass seed. Tnere will probably not be a read-
ily available source of seed for the Sorbs. I feel that late sum*:er or
fall xould be the optimum times to broadcast seed.
Please bear in mind that revegetation wrill be along-term proposition.
It wi]1 most likely take tyro or three years to get arty stand o£ grass
Vrhatever, The area Trill most likely never be suitable for pastureland.
llhatever vegetation becomes established Trill help prevent erosion, and
thatls about the size of it,
It tiros good to hear from you again. I donrt envy you your present
location. Stop by and see us sometime.
Sincerely, -
Chris Gray
District Conservationist
SCS, Norwood
CRG/deh
cc: Gary Bennett
Animas Aggregates, Telluride
