Means:
Thank you fox your correspondence dated July 31, 2007 (received by our office on August 2)
concerning the project listed above which is located on lands managed by the Bureau of Land
Management.
A search of our files indicates that at least three surveys have been conducted fox cultural resources in
the vicinity of the proposed permit area (generally described as Sections 35 and 36, T51N R20W;
Sections 1, 2, 11, and 12, TSON R20W). A number of cultural resources have been recorded in these
sections, some of which lack official detenninadons of eligibility. Two sites have been detem~nted
eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Site SME7022 (Rajah 30 Mine) and site
5ME7024 (Cherokee Camp) were determined eligible on 10/5/93. Because the map that was provided
does not clearly indicate the location and extent of the proposed permit area it is not clear whether
these resources are located within the proposed operation's area of potential effects. Proposed mining
activities should avoid adverse effects to SME7022 and SME7024 as well as those sites for which
eligibility remains unevaluated. If site avoidance is not possible, we recommend further consultation
with our office in order to identify options to avoid, minim;>e, or mitigate the adverse effect to the
sites.
Since there is Federal agency involvement in this project, please note that it is the responsibility of
the Federal agency to meet the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation
Act as set forth in 36 CFR 800 ("Protection of Historic Properties"). This includes the identification
of any historic properties (i.e. cultural resources which are eligible fox or are listed in the NRHP)
within the area of potential effects and determining whether the undertaking will have an effect
upon such properties.
