Gillis
1313 Sherman St., R*n 215
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Sir:
rn'e have had further contact with Daren Stone including a field
visit and letter which have anso:=red our concerns e:toressed to vour
agency. The following is our am=_nded recomm=_ndations or notes of
agreement v:ith the mineral owner.
Recommendation nl - Only enoug'.: fencing to control road access to
the oit area•is acceptable to nLM. This allows the rest of the
surface uses to continue and access to remain omen to'the rest of
tre BLM land. Protection fencing can be installed later around the
reseeded areas to allow for reclamation.
Recomr,.eadation r2 - Z?r. stone stated that he recognizes weeds as a
problem, and should be required to control weeds. We will caork
together to limit the ir_festation and possible spread of weeds from
the gravel operation.
F.ecomnendation n3 - The use of pit run material to build up a
cro'.o-ned and graded road satisfies our concern over mud, erosion and
further degradation of the BLM surface.
Reccmmendation n4 - no change, agreement.
P,ecommendation n5 - We appreciate Mr. Stone's sensitivity to
cultural resource protection and his cooperative spirit in helping
our agency to protect these resources. We have flagged the site
for interim protection (with Mr. Stone's assistance) and will work
together cooperatively to evaluate the site's significance and
complete any mitigation that is deemed necessary (in consultation
with the Colorado State Historic Preservation Office and the
President's Advisory Council on Historic Preservation).
San Juan Resnu rce .area
Federal Building
NOV 2 8 19g7 i01 Camino Dcl Rio
Durango, Colorado 51301
