Box 857
Pueblo, Colorado 81002
June 10, 198 '~~'C~I ~~
SUN 2 i 1999
R~C~MATIp~ D1DSIpIV
WRC File: 1664/2 R
Re: Pueblo East Pit Drainage Investigation
Dear Mr. Klune:
As outlined in our March 30, 1988 Proposal, on April 29, 1988, WRC
completed afield investigation to assess the conditions related to the arroyo
draining into the above referenced pit. The pit is located just south of U.
S. Highway 50 approximately one mile east of its intersection with Colorado
Highway 96 (see attached location map on Exhibit 1). Valco was interested in
determining whether diverting the runoff from the arroyo into the abandoned
Booth-Orchard Canal was a feasible alternative and estimating the amount of
work required to do so.
The purpose of the investigation was to determine:
(1) the dimensions of the existing highway and railroad crossing
structures upstream from the site,
(2) the condition and cross section of the existing Booth-Orchard Canal
which lies along the northern boundary of the pit area, and
(3) hydrologic parameters necessary to estimate the peak flow from the
5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year frequency storms using SCS Method
TR-55.
Survey information and photographs were obtained during our site visit.
Results of the April 29, 1988 investigation follow:
(1) The arroyo, which bisects the pit, crosses beneath Highway 50
through a 10 feet x 10 feet reinforced concrete box culvert. The
top of the highway is 22 feet above the upstream flowline of the
culvert.
Two reinforced concrete box culverts, a double 7 feet x 5 feet, and
a single 5 feet x 4 feet exist beneath the old railway bed just
upstream from the 10 feet x 10 feet box culvert. The old railway
bed is 14.5 feet above the upstream flowline of the culverts.
CONSULTING ENGINEERS
