Box 1526
Salt Lake City, Utah 89110
Re: Western Slope Carbon's Degasification Plan
Deaz Catherine:
As I indicated in our phone conversation yesterday, the Division is approving
Western Slope Carbon's request to drill a number of degasification wells above
the East Mine as specified on the map submitted with your letter of May 12, 198I.
It is my understanding that an archaeological survey has been completed in the
area, and no sites were identified. The results of this survey should be
submitted to the Division as soon as possible.
A11 roads that are to be constructed to provide access to the drill sites will
be required to meet the performance standards of Rule 4.03.3 for light use
roads. Topsoil shalt be salvaged, and when the roads are no longer needed for
monitoring purposes, reclamation shall be accomplished as required by 4.03.3(7).
Topsoil sha1I also be salvaged from the drill pad sites. Upon completion of
drilling, the pad area should be cleaned up, graded so as to restore the original
drainage contours, tops oiled and reseeded. The drill holes shall be fenced or
screened or otherwise managed to insure safety of people, livestock and wildlife.
When no Longer needed, the wells shall be permanently sealed as required by Rule
4.07.3.
You requested approval in a letter of May 18, 1981, for eight additional degas-
ification wells to be drilled above the area to be mined through the West Portal.
Approval is pending results of the archaeological survey on the area. Construc-
tion and reclamation requirements for the roads and drill sites will be as
specified for the drilling above the East Mine.
if you have any questions, please let me know.
Sincerely
~.
