RECEIVED
Marjory Abbott APR 05 2004
320 Sutherland Place o~..aMUw~a~&~~r
Manitou Springs CO 80829
March 30, 2004
DMG
1313 Sherman St.#215
Denver, Colorado
80203
Dear Mr. Keeffelew;
Last summer I had the pleasure of flying around the Peak in a small
plane . I was devastated by the size of the mining destruction near
Victor. I could not believe the destruction to the hills and mountains,
the immense crater being mined, not the unbelievable leaching pad.
Soon after that I took visitors to Victor and Cripple Creek and again
was amazed. I could see the mining results from Gillette, and all along
the back road to Victor. I am a native of Colorado Springs, and that
area has always been one of my favorite ones. I always have taken
visitors there for the beauty of the area. Now I take them to see
what damage mining can do.
I also took the visitors to the top of the peak . Enclosed is a picture
of the massive destruction seen from the cog road and the top. Is
this really what we want tourists to see in our state?
I am alarmed for several reasons
1. How much more of the mountains are they going to take down?
2. The beauty of the areas is being destroyed rapidly.
3. How safe are those leaching pads now? and how safe will they be
in 50 or 100 years?.
4. How can Canyon City and the Arkansas River be protected from
massive leaks?
5. How can that whole area be restored?
Sincerely,
