Dept. of IVatura( Hcselirces
Carul Palttke has forwarded a copy of yoDr letter of 21 May 158C con-
cerning Flatiron's proposal to fertilize sagebrush on 170 acres of non-
permit acreage near the Bourg Coal Property in North Park, Jackson County,
Colorado. Flatiron's interest in the sagebrush and sage grouse resource
and willingness to mitigate for loss of sage grouse habitat on the Bourg
Coal Property is commendable.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife supports Flatiron's proposal to
mitigate sage grouse habitat loss through fertilization with ammonium
nitrate (33.5$ N) at the rate of 100 lbs. of nitrogen per acre. Applica-
tion will be on a 1 time basis at a 1:1 ratio (i.e. 1 acre fertilized for
each 1 acre of the area under permit). Flatiron will be responsible for
and will contract for the fertilizer and application. The Colorado Divi-
sion of Wildlife in cooperation with Flatiron and the Bureau of Land
Management will design the mitigation plan and fertilizer application.
Application will be accomplished by the most reasonable (least costly)
method, hopefully in the fall of 1980. The Colorado Division of Wildlife
will continue to monitor the sage grouse population in the area at no cost
to Flatiron. Data obtained will be made available to all interested parties.
We presently have radios on sage grouse using the Denmark lek and will
be able to plot spring and summer use patterns for males prior to the start
of mining. It may be of interest that the number of males on the Denmark
lek peakeu at 144 in 1580, siiyhtly Higher tF;ali in 175•
Sincerely,
CEB/jib
cc: C. Pahlke
L.
