Box 1030
Paionia, CO 81428
RE: Hawk's Nest Backfilling and Drainage Reconstruction Project
RN-MINES-COAL-10
Dear Mr. Ward,
The Division of Minerals and Geology is conducting the final phase
of reclamation at the Hawk's Nest Mine located in Gunnision County
Sections 3 and 10; T13S; R90W. The operator of the mine, Western
Slope Carbon, Inc. failed to meet the regulatory requirements for
an extended period of time. This failure to comply resulted in
revocation of the mining permit and forfeiture of the reclamation
performance bond being held by the Division. As part of the
reclamation process, the Division needs to provide notification of
the impending reclamation work to all surface owners of the area to
be reclaimed.
The reclamation work involved on Forest Service property is the
sealing and plugging of four (4) methane gas wells. These wells
are located in Sections 3 and 10; T13S; R90W. Minor road
improvements will be necessary to access the abandoned wells. The
wells will be sealed in accordance with the Regulations of the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board for Coal Mining. Please find
a map depicting the location of the methane gas wells.
The work is scheduled to begin in late September and proceed until
early November. If you have any questions regarding this
reclamation job, please do not hesitate to call me at 866-3567.
Sincerely,
~~ S-
WVC1V X
Erica S.
