RecLues[ [o Add
To Specifications For Underdrain.
Dear Mr. Keffelew
We discussed today, during Dr. Pendleton's visit, the nature (size distribution) of finger
drain material in a small valley which has not evidenced running water and which is only
damp. This letter serves to add the specifications for these areas and to ensure that our
understanding of the measures agreed upon during Dr. Pendleton's July 14, 1994 (today) site
inspection. We also ask that the specifications, if acceptable to you, be formally approved
by the Office.
Because the approved underdrain fill material for the center drain under the valley leach
facility and other larger valley areas (-12 inch) is still being excavated and because there was
only evidence of dampness during excavation of a certain valley (only surface moisture was
seen -there was no flowing water throughout the period of observation), the addition to the
specifications was proposed for this "dry" channel. Based on the grain size distribution, the
proposal was field-approved by Golder Associates Inc., subject to Office of Mined Land
Reclamation approval.
The proposed backfill material is poorly graded, free draining, and processed durable granite
that conforms to [he specification presented herewith as Attachment 1.
We have termed this area a "secondary underdrain" because of the lack of flow and relatively
small size of the valley. The secondary underdrain affected by the additional of the
specification presented via this letter was excavated to approximate dimensions of 5 feet wide
