TYlis facility is also known as the Vats Companies Pit #115. Our inspection report form is
enclosed with this letter, which summarizes our findings.
Our inspection of Pit #115 was prompted by a number of letters from a citizen's group called Grow
Responsibly in Platteville, or GRIP. This facility operates under a general gravel mining discharge
permit. This general permit is in the process of being renewed this year. The letters requested that
the permit for this facility not be renewed until the facility switched to wet mining.
GRIP is concerned about the impact of mine dewatering activities at Pit #115 on private wells in the
vicinity. These issues fall within the regulatory authority of the Colorado Division of Minerals and
Geology, rather than the Water Quality Control Division. We understand that GRIP has been in
contact with Mr. Cazl Mount of the DMG. Based on our field inspection, there aze no operational
issues that would prevent renewal of CDPS Dischazge Permit #COG-500356 for this facility.
Pit #115 is a gravel mining operation. It is located southeast of the intersection of State Highway 66
and County Road 17 in Weld County. The facility operates using a dry pit mining technique. It
produces sand, gravel, and construction aggregates.
Wastewater at the facility is produced from pit dewatering and material processing activities.
Wastewater treatment consists of simple pond settling. At the time of our inspection, the water
handling and treatment processes had been reconfigured. There aze currently two permitted outfalls
for the facility, identified as 001 and 004. Because of the reconfiguration, and third outfall should be
added to fhe permit. These issues are discussed in more detail below.
L Vl
C:\d\?.APROJ\Denver4500346-1 Varna Sand and Gravel Inspection in August 2002.doc
September 11, 2002 Page 1 of 3 Mike Havens
