Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety
Deaz Janet:
The purpose of this letter is to confirm the discussions we had on the telephone yesterday
afternoon regarding the reclamation monitoring which Mr. Kent Gorham of your office has
recommended to be conducted at the Southfield Mine this yeaz.
As we discussed there are three azeas which need to be sampled for year three monitoring at this
location this yeaz. They consist all of areas reclaimed in 2003 and correspond to all of the lands
owned by the Vento's, the Corley property as well as the train loadout area. All of the reclaimed
lands on the Vento and Corley property were reseeded with different seed mixtures and therefore
should be sampled sepazately.
There are several distinct reclamation pazcels on the Vento property which were reclaimed in
2003. Since these areas were reseeded at the same time, with the identical seed mixture, we are
proposing to lump all of these individual pazcels into one composite Vento Reclamation Block.
This means that three different reclamation areas will be sampled, the Vento property, Corley
property and train loadout area. When we asked you about the need to sample the corresponding
reference azeas for these sites, you indicated that since this was only interim reclamation
monitoring and there was no intention of comparing fmal reclamation success, there was no need
to sample the coaesponding reference areas.
It is our intention of starling the sampling this afternoon and will continue un61 we have finished
the sampling of these three areas, where we intend on sampling 15 cover transects and 30
production and shrub density transects. In addition, we will be sampling representative shrub
clumps to get and measurement on overall survival of the woody transects that were set out a few
years ago. This sampling will be similaz to that conducted on the shrub clumps at the Trapper
Mine, but rather than sampling each individual shrub clump we will sample representative
clumps and calculate overall transplanted shrub survival in this manner.
If you have any comments or if you have a different understanding of our discussions, please
contact Mr. George Patterson of Energy Fuels Coal, Inc. as soon as possible so we can ensure
that your concerns are addressed.
Sincerely,
~~
Kent A.
