Lochhead
E.ecunve Director
nlichael B. Long
Divmm~ Dneaor
Thank you for meeting with DMG staff at the DMG Durango field office on £3/13/96.
DMG appreciates you and Mr. Rick Mayo taking the time to meet with DMG and discuss
your concerns with activities conducted by Mquntain Gravel & Construction Company at
the Thomas Pit. Concerns, stated by yourself and Mr. Mayo, included adverse impact to
the Wallace Ditch and to the channel of the Animas River, potentially resulting from
mining activities conducted by the operator of the Thomas Pit.
The Thomas Pit is located approximately 12 miles north of Durango, on the east side of
Highway 550, in portions of the SW 1 /4 of the SE 1 /4 of Section 25, and in portions of
the W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of Section 36, both in T37N, R9W, NMPM, La PIat3 County.
The 112 Regular permit is approved for 29.8 acres affected area. The operation is
approved for gravel excavation from two pit areas adjacent to the Animas River channel
and material crushing and washing, and concrete production.
During the meeting, you and Mr. Mayo submitted several documents to DMG to be
included with the public record and requested DMG to provide copy of the "denial letter"
for an 1981 amendment to the permit. I have reviewed the microfiche files and have
located information which indicates that in 1981 DMG approved an amendrcient for
increased affected area along the west side of the existing permit area, to include
additional acreage for material stockpiles. Originally, the amendment applic~ltion included
request for additional affected area within the Animas River channel, along the east side
of the existing permit area. The request for additional affected area within the Animas
River channel was removed from the amendment, by request from the operator. Please
find attached, letters dated 10/20/81 and 10/15/81, addressing the request to limit the
increased affected area to material stockpiles area only.
In response to your concerns, DMG has scheduled an inspection of the Thornas Pit for
8/19/96, 9:00 am. DMG has confirmed the date and time with your office.
