Eilts
Coal View Ghoat Ranch
Mystic Trail 17880 US 40
Steamboat Springs, CO 80487
October 3, 1988
To: Concerned Citizens
The Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division (CMLRD) and
the Federal Office of Surface Mining (OSM) are required by
law to preserve, and closely restore, the environment
dealing with mining operations. Have these requirements
been accomplished?
The CMLRD and OSM are now contemplating releasing the
bond of the "Haul Road" to this land owner. However, there
are some questions that have to be answeredl
1. Why did the CMLRD insist on destroying a perfectly
good road to install 90 1 foot deep by 15 to 25 foot wide
ditches ar_ross it? What use can this mud hole road be put
to? And was any consideration given to future repair of the
road? Much less, grading the road, or snow removal?
Furthermore, why was there no court action taken against Sun
Coal for placing round rocks, and filling in the ditches o£
the road? .And the final part of this question, does the
CMLRD intend to pay for the damages caused by their own
failure?
2. What action will he taken to correct the 4 slide
areas caused by Sun Coal on and next to the Haul Road?
3. Why are the berms and the steep slopes still present
and without vegetation?
4. Why is silt still allowed to build up in our ponds,
while it is removed from theirs and used to bury cattle on
other land, or to be piled up and not terraced?
5. Hrna can the CMLRD allow grazing on our reclaimed
unfenced land, while there is no vegetation or trees on it?
6. Why has the CMLRD allowed and caused more erosion on
our land due to the haul road ditches? Why are the large
rocks there, and are they gaming to he removed?
