As you may know, this mill processed gold ores from mines in Cripple Creek around the tom of the century and was later converted to process base metal ores from various places. As your photo indicates, the tailings form a very obvious landmazk on Highway 24 beside Colorado Springs. The Mined Land Reclamation Act (Colorado Revised Statutes 34-32-101 et seq.) was passed in 1973 to deal with mines that were active at that time or afrer. The Gold Hill Mill pre-dated the Act, so the Division of Minerals and Geology has no authority to deal with the situation, unless perhaps the tailings were re-mined. Currently, the Division has no files on this operation. You may find it useful to know that EPA recently issued a report on the Gold Hill site. It includes information on possible contaminant pathways, surface and groundwater quality, stream sediment composition, and possible receptors. You should be able to obtain that report by contacting Ms. Pat Smith at EPA in Denver (312-6082); ask for the "Preliminary Assessment and Site Investigation for the Gold Hill Mill."
