SH ELTO N, Director
DATE: February 14, 1985
T0: Susan Mowry and Joe Oliver
FROM: M.S. Savage ~nv~-:.-

RE: Trapper Correspondence of December 18, 1984, Requesting Approval for
Seeding of Alfalfa
I have reviewed Trapper's request to include alfalfa in their seed mix for
topsoil stockpiles and have the following comments.
Trapper has not swayed me from my position that the Division should not allow
the inclusion of alfalfa in the topsoil stockpile seed mix.
Trapper has never demonstrated (per 4.15.2) that alfalfa, as an introduced
species, is desirable and necessary to achieve the post-mining land use or
necessary to achieve a quick, temporary and stabilizing cover. In addition to
alfalfa's potential to produce bloat, it is very competitive species, and I
would expect dominance of alfalfa on stockpiles seeded with it. alfalfa is
more properly seeded in carefully managed pasture lands (where the Division
has approved its use). Finally, it does not appear as if alfalfa is
particularly adapted to the Trapper soils, being adapted to loams, sands and
deep soils, whi]e Trapper, if my recollection serves me, has largely clayey to
clay loam soils.
/ph
Doc.
