~u Delta County Health Department
~(~ 103 West 11th Street
p k'fM ~ Delta, Colorado 81416
874-9715
May 11, 1989
a';tAt~^ i.~'.f'U
I?FCI RPIAI'IpfV OIV(SION
Tom Gillis
Mined land Reclamation Division
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Co. 80203
iii iiuiiiiniu iii
RE: Western Slope Carbon, Hawks Nest Mine gob disposal pit Delta County
Dear Mr. Gillis,
We understand that the MLR has revoked the permit and that the bond has been forfieted
for the Western Slope Carbon, Hawks Nest Mine ~ob disposal pit No. 6.- This"siteis --
located in a portion of the N25Fi and the WZNWZ Section 28, Township 14 South, Range 92
West of the 6th P.M. Delta County, Colorado. Please be advised that the Delta County
Board of Commissioners has purchased this property in 1988 which they have leased for
the past 12 years as a landfill site. I have enclosed a copy of a proposal suixnitted to
the Colorado Department of Health to amend the Certificate of Designation to allow asbe-
stos waste disposal in the "gob" disposal pit. Also, if possible, the county would uti-
lize the rest of the "gob" disposal for trash disposal. We are mainly concerned about
the falmability of the gob if used for solid waste cover material. We would appreciate
any comments you might have on the compatability of using the "gob" pit for solid waste
disposal. If you have any laboratory data or analysis on this "gob" material at the
North Fork Landfill please forward that information to us.
It is important to the County that this solid waste disposal site be used to its ful-
lest potential. Therefore, the county would petition you to suspend plans for reclamation
of this site until the county has completely used this area for the solid waste landfill.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and if you should have any questions re-
garding this matter please contact me. Also, if we are being presumptuous regarding
your permiting and bonding of this site please inform us inorder that our plans might
dovetail with your responsibilities.
Truly,
Kenneth Nordstrom
Director of Environmental Health
KN:iwp
