DEC ~`~ 985
•~~ • . .
Mike; (,..
Henry Barbe and Powderhorn Coal Co. should be commended for their voluntary "•
work completed at the abandoned Blue Flame coal mine site northeast of
Palisade.
The site originally had two hazardous horizontal openings identified during
1984 field reconnaissance. The site was to be included in the following
construction season through the IPiP bidding process. Communication with
Henry in early 1985 indicated Powderhorn's interest in assuming the project.
Powderhorn not only eliminated the two adits by a graded backfill technique
but also removed a tremendous amount of scrap metal, railing, car bodies, a
deteriorated loadout, and other debris that detracted from the aesthetics
of the site. All disturbed areas, totalling over an acre, were ripped,
fertilized and seeded. Identification monuments were installed not only in
front of the two identified adits but also in front of an additional collapsed
adit that was also regraded and reseeded.
Henry Barbe and Powderhorn Coal Co. completed an excellent job that was well
beyond the scope of work that was envisioned by the Inactive Mine Program.
lJishing you a Happy Holiday season.
Paul Krabacher
Reclamation Specialist
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
