Box 535
Somerset, CO 81434
RE: Hawk's Nest Mine Reclamation
Surface Owner Notification
Dear Mr. Wright,
Or'ep[O
~ a
~~'b
~~ o
.a~g;
~ rB]6
Ruy Rnmri
Governor
M.c hack B. Lunc
Drvrsion Dvcclrn
The Division of Minerals and Geology will be performing final
reclamation work at the Hawk's Nest Mine beginning in October of
this year. The operator, Western Slope Carbon, Inc., failed to
meet regulatory requirements for an extended period of time. This
failure to comply resulted in revocation of the mining permit and
forfeiture of the reclamation performance bond being held by the
Division. As part of the reclamation process, the Division needs
to provide notification of the impending reclamation work to all
surface owners of the area to be reclaimed. Information at the
Gunnison County Courthouse indicated that a majority of the surface
area to be reclaimed is owned by Somerset Mining Company.
The reclamation work includes the two (2) concrete coal silos,
conveyor system, truck dump scale, removal of the coal waste,
topsoil and subsoil replacement, and revegetation of the disturbed
areas. Demolition and removal of the concrete silos will involve
closing a section of the old highway 133 for a short period of time
near the Hawk's Nest Silo Facility. Please contact the Division if
this road closure presents a problem for the Somerset Mine.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please do
not hesitate to contact me at 866-3567.
Sincerely,
Erica S.
