Box 535
Somerset, CO 81434
Re: Somerset Mine, File C-81-022, PR-02, Public Comment
Dear Mr. Wright:
Enclosed please find a copy of a public comment received in response to
notifications of the Somerset Mine permit renewal which were sent to surface
and mineral owners within the mines permit area.
U.S. Steel, former operator of Somerset Mine, terminated coal leases in the
area described in that letter, except for a small portion of E-seam federal
coal lease C-033301 which was assigned to Grand Mesa Properties who has in
turn relinquished the lease as of July 3, 1992. The lease is currently
pending assignment to the Allen brothers (Gifford and Dean).
OF eQ(Q
~~
~~ o
.•
rs~c
Roy Romer
Governor
Michael B. Long
O rvision Director
It is the Division's opinion that renewal of Somerset Mine's permit (C-81-022)
does not affect Mr. Allen's rights to pursue mining or marketing of his E-seam
coal or any coal adjacent to his property. Therefore, this comment will not
delay the issuance of the Somerset Mine permit renewal scheduled for
October 22. 1993.
A letter explaining the Division's position on this matter is being sent to
Mr. Allen. If you have any comments or concerns, please contact me before
October 22, 1993.
Sincerely,
Steve S.
