Curtiss
Division of Minerals and Geology
Minerals Section - North
1313 Sherman St, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Gary:
RE: Lakewood Brick and Tile, CO.
MLRB Permit # M-79-045
Inspection Problems
RF(`,EIVED
OCT 2 5 ~ggy
Division of Minerals ~ Geoioy;
As noted in your inspection report dated 2-June-95 there were four
possible problems at this facility that could affect the request we
submitted in January 1995. I responded to #2 in August 1995 by
submitting photos of the signs and markers and asked for an extension on
Items #1, 3 and #4.
Items 1 and 3 concerned the importation of Recyclable asphalt and
concrete Jefferson County Road Department had hauled to the site for
processing. After discussing the issue with them they decided to stop
this practice immediately and began processing and hauling the crushed
material from the site. I asked them if they wanted to continue this
practice in the future and advised them we had to make changes to the
permit to allow this practice if they did. They assured me that they
would not do it again since they planned to create a recycling center in
central Jeffco where this would take place from now on.
In August 1995 I visited the site and all raw material was crushed, a
r~~ large stockpile of this processed materials was in place, but it appeared
t they were hauling it offsite as fast as possible. The county supervisor
~ stated it would be gone within the next 120 days. Earlier this week I
~.-~ again visited the site and would estimate approximately 508 of the
material was gone. I expect they will be finished removing the material
within the next 60 days. For these reasons Items 1 and 3 can be noted
as corrected and no further action is required. If this type of
operation ever takes place again, we will submit the appropriate change
and bond evaluation to cover it before the activity takes place.
Item #4 is the hardest to address. The water that has accumulated in the
excavation is from surface runoff. This water accumulated in the area
where clay was extracted and is not associated with the upper surface of
gravel. Our experience is that it accumulated from surface moisture,
i.e., rain, snow, etc., and is not part of the ground water table. The
operators observations over the past 20 years indicate that at no time
