Lonb
RE: AIIOnymous complaint to the EPA Dirrs~on Director
From the facsimiles received on March 22 and 23, 1995, it appeared
that Craig Olson with the Gunnison County Health Department was
going to inspect Mountain Coal Company (MCC) regarding the
anonymous complaint to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
I called Mr. Olson on March 31, 1995, to inquire whether he
discovered anything relating to the complaint during his
inspection. He said he did the inspection last week and noticed
nothing abnormal. He said he only drove up the main access road
and did not speak to anyone. He did not walk around but did not
see any spills. I informed him that I was planning to do an
inspection during the week of April 3, 1995, and would look as
well. I told him that it appeared the complaint was made against
Patrick-Harrison, who is a contractor to MCC working on the
installation of the Lone Pine Gulch fan. I told Mr. Olson that I
think the complaint was probably in reference to the Lone Pine
Gulch road and facilities.
Mr. Olson said he plans to take no action and will not file a
report since the complainant was anonymous. He said he goes over
to the site about once a week during the summer and about once
every other week in the winter. He said he will inspect the Lone
Pine Gulch road the next time he visits the area.
I performed an inspection of MCC on April 5 and 6, 1995. I did not
see anything that was mentioned in the complaint at the mine site
or at the Lone Pine Gulch facilities. Therefore, the Division will
not take any action at this time, but will continue to watch for
this problem more closely.
CEJ/007COMP95
