Lochhead
Ev(smive DrtPCIp
Michael B. EonR
DIV iSgl1 DlreclOr
Susan McCarron has requested Division personnel conduct an investigation into determining
whether underground mining activities at the Golden Eagle Mine may be adversely affecting local
groundwater systems. She has asked we specifically determine whether a nearby landowner's
water well may have recently declined in historic yield and, if so, whether the decline in yield is
attributable to the mine's operations.
Susan has further asked.thatit be determined whether-one of the mine's airshafts is causing an
adverse drdwdoivn of regional aquifers, whether this airshaft, .if found to be causing an adverse
drawdown, was constructed in a manner that was expected to minimi~r. impacts to groundwater
systems, if the airshaft could be accuse-in the possible yield loss in the landowner's well, and
whether the airshaft could be recased or otherwise repaired if it has caused a decline in the well
yield.
Since Randy Price and Bari3ara Pavlik, our groundwater specialists, are currently both in the
midst of several projects that will carry them through to January 1995, and given that Randy will
assume Lead Specialist responsibilities for the Basin Resources mines eventually, I believe it
makes sense to assign this project to Randy.
Susan has asked that the project be initiated as soon as possible. Given that Randy has prior
vacation, field work and permitting assignments, I think it would be best if Randy could begin
this investigation by January 30, 1995.
Thanks, and if you or Randy need further information, please see me.
DIHlbjw
cc: Joe Dudash
Susan McCarron
Randy Price
M:\055\81 W\DDE.DAB
