Let me review the
s ups leading to the elk calving study and consequently its intent.
The Division of G!ildlife was concerned about possible impact to an elk
ca'.ving area sou [h of [t1e Energy Fuels mine. We had only scant data on
which to establish an unsuitability designation for the area. The 1979
and 1980 study was designed to more fully assess and delineate the calving
habitat. Briefly we found the calving area to be much more extensive than
was originally thought. Based on this, all parties agreed that the buffer
area in the lease, could be mined but we needed to determine if the elk
which at one time calved there, would shift to another area. The radio-
tr~_~!;in~ effort should yield this information.
I do not believe that further vegetation data should be collected during
the netit calving season. I believe we have sufficient vegetative data
no•.~ and additional efforts twill only further disturb the calving elk.
STe do need to establish which radioed elk are calving in the area without
further human disturbance, and then follow these elk in future calving
se lsons.
If v^u have any questions, please let me know.
AF:J:; b
cc: Finley
Don Henne
Herb Conley
Bill Clark
DEPA RT,v,E tJT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Monte Poscoe, Executive Director WILDLIFE COMMISSION,Wilbur Redden, Chairman
Donold Fernandez, Vice Choirnton • Jomes Smith, Setretory • leon K.
