(COLOWYO), CDMG PERMIT C-81-019;
PROPOSED BASELINE FIYDROLOGIC SAMPLING LOCATIONS FOR SOUTH
TAYLOR AREA
Deaz Mc Walker:
Colowyo will be initiating baseline water sampling for the proposed South Taylor Expansion Area and requests
[he Division comment on the proposed sampling locations. We have previously sent the Division a parameter
list, and we are supplementing it with the identification and mapping of sites, and a listing of [he frequency of
analyses. The objective of the sampling program, and the intent of the Probable Hydrologic Consequence (PHC)
that will be written [o support [his permit revision, is to provide supplemental.data in the azea of disturbance to
support the existing permit document, C-81-019.
Colowyo is proposing a continuation of truck and shovel surface mining operation to the south of the Wes[ Pi[ and
Section 16 Pit. Colowyo will extract as many as four coal seams, known as [he F, G, H, and I seams. The
proposed expansion area is roughly akidney-shaped area running from the west ridge line of the West Fork of
Taylor Creek watershed east toward Good Springs Creek. Drainage from the site will flow predominantly south
into the West Fork of Good Spring Creek. In the future, one sediment pond may be necessary to the north in the
headwaters of the West Fork of Taylor Creek. Portions of Sections 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 28 in T3N,
R94W and R93W aze contained in the proposed pit area. The proposed South Taylor Expansion Area includes
sites currently or historically monitored, and several new sites.
Surface Water Sites
Baseline surface water sites consist of perennial streams, springs, and stock ponds. Colowyo proposes to monitor
stream sites for field pazameters at a monthly frequency, and to acquire full suite analyses quarterly. Springs will
be monitored monthly for field parameters between May and October, and annual full suite water quality analyses
will be acquired in June from the four largest flowing springs. Staff gages will be installed in the stock ponds,
and field pazameters will be acquired monthly between May and October.
