Lochhead
~~
From: Dan Hernandez E arc W rve Dueaor
~ h~ichael tl Lung
Dwision Director
Re: Reclamation of the Arness-McGriffin Mine
The Arness-McGriffin Mine is an underground coal mine situated approximately 4 miles west of
Durango, Colorado. The Division forfeited the bond associated with this site some time ago. The
site's revoked permit number is C-77-003UG. The Division has balance of $1050.00 remaining.
I visited this site with Steve Shuey of our Durango Office on April 24th, 1996. There are three
areas at the site that could use some additional reclamation work. In descending order of priority,
they are:
At a switchback, water is running across the fom~er mine access road from an upslope road
ditch, and down the outslope of the road's embankment, causing some pretty severe erosion.
What we'd like done is to have the road regraded so that it's tilted back toward the hillside,
and have the gullies on the outslope filled in and seeded.
2. At the southeast side of the reclaimed portal area, some gullies have begun to form. We'd
like these filled in and seeded as well.
3. There is some severe erosion beginning m a drainage at the west side of the reclaimed area,
just downhill from the old access road. Steve and I thought that some large rip rap placed
at the head of this erosion, just below the access road, might help check the erosion.
Our hope would be to incorporate this work into another Inactive Mines project on the area, to help
reduce the cost of mobilizing equipment to the Amess-McGriffin site. If you have any questions
call me or Steve Shuey. Thanks.
DIH\jrc
cc: Harry Ranney, DMG -Denver
Steve Shuey, DMG -Durango
Pat Tucker, Colorado Division of Wildlife, Durango
m:\oss\jrc\dhmemo
