The seeding was completed according
to the approved timeframe. Generally, professional landscaping companies are not hired for reclamation
projects. As I stated before, with reclamation projects it commonly takes several growing seasons for
the vegetation to develop. Based on what I've heard from the Division inspectors, seed germination is
progressing as expected at the Southfield Mine. The Division has not noted revegetation problems. Inspectors
will continue to monitor the site on a monthly basis and revegetation is a primary focus during these inspections.
If erosion or germination problems become apparent, the Division will contact EFCI. Furthermore, EFCI has
committed to quantitatively monitor the revegetation at years 3, 7, 9 and 10. The Division evaluates the
monitoring reports and if a problem with vegetative cover or species composition is detected, we will ask EFCI to
interseed or reseed depending on what the data shows.
Please be aware that we have had some organizational changes at the Division. Kent Gorham has been
reassigned as the lead specialist for the Southfield Mine. He is now responsible for inspecting the site on a
monthly basis and doing the permitting. His telephone number is 303-866-4931.
Sandy Brown
-----Original Message-----
From: Tena@aol.com [mailto:Tena@aol.com]
Sent: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 10:51 PM
To: sandy.brown@state.co.us; Saunders.l.k@att.net; tedcoulter@yahoo.com; Pascalena@aol.com
Subject: Vento Coal Property in Fremont County
The revegitation at the portal doesn't seem that it was done by a professional landscaping company? I saw
pictures of the area and I am definitely not impressed. It also seems that the material that was placed on
top of the seeds is different than anything that I have previously seen used. I realize that you stated in your
last email that it might be a while before you can evaluate it, but the germination doesn't seem to compare
to projects that I have seen in the past.
Linda was just there this week and counted only 6 bunches of grass in a two foot square and that is not a
good revegetation rate. It should be like the natural grass which is a alot more. The grass at the revegated
pond is much better.
Can you please sent me the report of the revegitation? And also the standards that your
d padment-reg ding revegitation?
Tena Gallagher
10/27/2004
