Dept. of Neturel Resources
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Mr. Janes:
This is a short history of the westhoBf Pit, which has been in the family
for over 40 years to make you more familiar with it.
The pit was opened in the 1920's by area farmers and in the 50's and 60's
leased to Morgan County and to Dorn's Sand & Gravel Co. In 1972 I go into
the gravel business xith Morgan Sand & Gravel being the company name.
In 1979 the company obtained a mining permit at xhich time xe xere involved
in supplying material to the Paxnee Poxer Station and xere threatened xlth
a stop order from the bureau if we did not get the permit. So to save time,
I permitted the entire 40 acres xhere xe xere working even though part of
the 40 had already been mined out by the county and Dorn's yeazs previously.
The map enclosed is made from a recent aerial photo obtained from the ASC
office in Morgan County and is color coded for clarity. This map shoxs
that there is 18 acres undisturbed, 11 acres xhere xe have mined and have
partially reclaimed by placing top soil and manure xith only mulshing and
seeding left to do. Four acres are used in active mining nox and for future
use and 1 acreafor old stock piles of screenings. Also, 6 acres xhich was
mined out yeazs ago by the County and Dorn's. Adjacent ground zest of the
permitted 40 acres xas also mined out by the County and Dorn's.
There Ss no reason to have the entire 40 acres permitted as xe have confined
our operations in the 4 acre area. Therefore, I xould like to abolish the
18 acres undisturbed from the permit and the remaing 22 acres bonded as the
map shoxs:
11 acres Minor Disturbance
4 acres Major or Active Mining
1 acre Stockpiles
6 acres Previously mined by the County and Dorn's
My rec~iming costs are enclosed and have been put together by outside contrac-
tors.
Si~l , ~- ~.
l~
/Geo Westhoff I ~
