Gunnison No. 1 Mine, 1 have
enclosed a copy of a paper entitled The Use of the Similarity Index in Evaluating
Reclamation Success at the Mt. Gunnison Mine. The paper, prepared by Atlantic
Richfield, suggests the use of a similarity index as an alternative to the Shannon-
Wiener Index as a measure of species diversity in evaluating reclamation success.
I would appreciate your review and comments on this proposed alternative measure
of reclamation success. Mr. Larry Kline of our Environmental Services Group and I
are available to discuss this proposal with you and representatives from the OSM at
your earliest convenience so that we may agree upon an acceptable success criteria
for species diversity on reclaimed areas.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Larry Kline at 575-7505 or
me at 575-7949.
Sincerely,
~~~~~~
Paige B.
