M-77-572
Dear Ms. Hellner:
This Department wrote you on September 25, 1986 expressing our concerns with
Valco's mining operations north of Lamar in the Arkansas River, immediately
below one of our bridges. Subsequent correspondence from your offir_e to Va1co
(dated November 3, 1986), and Valco's response (dated November 11, 1986) has
started a dialogue between Valco and the Department.
On November 19, representatives of the Department and Valco met at the site in
Lamar. We discussed our concerns and what we belie~~ed to be possible impacts
on the highway and our bridges because of this mining operation. We also
discussed possible corrective solutions to the problem. Valco's engineer, Mr.
William Ruzzo, proposed possible protecti~-e measures which could be 'aken by
Valco.
It was agreed that Mr. Ruzzo will submit to the Department sketches :showing
their proposed protection for our review. The time required for the
submittal, review and any subsequent acceptance will probably take se+veral
weeks, and ma;~be months. However, we have begun to work on this, and all the
parties feel a satisfactory solution can be found.
I wanted to inform you of the status of this, and try to keep you informed of
what has happened. If you would like to be involved in any subsequert reviews
as plans are generated, please feel free to contact me and we will share what
we have with you.
Sincerely,
~R: BROi/'~4H~
D trict Preconstruciton Engineer
RQB/ls
cc: Mr. William R. Eisenman, Valco, Inc.-Lamar
