Box 535 Somerset, CO 81434 AE: Hawk's Neat Coal Silo Demolition Project (RN-GOAL-MINES-9) Notice of Activity Dear Mr. Wright, of «Yo "~_ t6 0 .~. ~ 18]6 Roy Romer Governor Michael B.LOng Divivon Dnector Ae you are aware from my previous letter dated Auqust 17, 1993, the Division of Hinerale and Geology ie initiating reclamation at the Hawke Nest Hine. The first phase of reclamation includes demolition and removal of the coal silos and associated structures. The remaining reclamation work will commence in the summer of 1994. Such future reclamation include removal of the coal material, replacement of topsoil, and sealing a number of de-gas wells. The Division is currently working with the contractor, Miners Inc., to demolish the Coal Silos and associated structures. In early to mid-February, the conveyor structure and truck dump scale will be removed from site by the contractor. Once these structures have been removed the coal silos will be demolished and buried at the Hawk's Nest Site. A trench roughly 100 feet long, 70 feet wide and 14 feet deep will be created east of the Silos and used as the borrow area. During this time, the old state highway 133 at the east end will not be accessible. Please advise personnel at Somerset Mining company that parts of old Highway 133 will be closed during this construction period. The Division has been working closely with the West Elk Hine and the Denver Rio Grande Railroad to ensure that this activity will not disrupt the transportation routes. Recent conversations with the Rio Grande Rail road suggest that 100 feet of the railroad track under the Silos will be removed during the blasting. This will slightly change the train loading configuration at the Weat Elk Mine. The Division and the Denver Rio Grande Railroad believe that the Somerset Mine will not be affected by this activity. There may be some congestion if West Elk and Somerset need to load trains at the same time- An estimated time in which the track will be removed is between February 16 and February 28, roughly 2 weeks.
