The study was designed to determine impacts on ferru-
ginous hawks from the construction and operation of the Deseret Western Railroad.
A copy of the 1985 study is enclosed for your review. This is my only copy, so I
must ask that you return it by the end of the year.
Western Fuels-Utah, Inc. also recently implemented a program to determine best
seeds to plant and best mulching techniques to be used along the south-facing
railroad fill slope. Six seed varieties were planted and three mulching techniques
will be evaluated over the next couple of years.
Additionally, Tim Chervick has done some work with relocating bird nests. I
thought you would like to know about these efforts prior to evaluating mines for
the CMA environmental awards. I think the Deserado Mine justly deserves to be
recognized for its environmental program.
Very truly yours,
Tommy D.
