Lochhead
Eaecwive Duecior
Roy Ramer
Governor
Michael B. Long
Drv~sion Director
Your letter dated September 28, 1995 requested additional information regarding the postmining
land use of the Edna Mine property. You inquired about their "present request to alter the
usage of the property to grazing and ranch uses." There is currently no request to change the
postmining land use. It is the Division's understanding, based on conversations with P&M
personnel, that the reclaimed Edna Mine may become part of a working ranch operation. As
I mentioned, there was a recent revision in which another coal mine operator proposed a
postmining land use change from rangeland and wildlife habitat to pasture. As a result of that
change, there was no longer a requirement for reestablishment of shrubs.
You also asked about the Possibility that the present revegetation requirements, specifically for
woody stems, might be relieved and if it were possible for the mine area to become residential.
There are a number of Possibilities for alternative postmining land uses, including residential,
commercial, and industrial. Any changes to an alternative land use would need to be approved
by this office and the Routt County Planning Commission, with input from any land owners
taken into consideration.
If you have questions or are in need of additional information, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Gltc~
Susan L Burg ier
Environmental Protection Specialist
c: David Beverlin, Edna Mine
STATE OF COLORADO
SLB\10109S.WP
