Lunt; <br />Division Director <br />In response to your request of Friday, May 24th, I have completed a review of Mr. <br />Reins' report. I offer the following comments for your consideration. <br />"Background" Discussion <br />It is of interest to note that Mr. Reins comments that the Tatums' residence "has <br />since been covered with a cement stucco finish reinforced with wire mesh". From <br />this statement I conclude that the cement stucco finish was applied sometime after <br />the original construction. <br />As an aside, responding to personal curiosity and professional interest, I have recently <br />begun researching characteristics and methodology of construction of adobe <br />structures. I have acquired and read a copy of Paul Graham McHenry, Jr.'s text <br />entitled "ADOBE AND RAMMED EARTH BUILDINGS, Design and Construction", <br />published by the University of Arizona Press. I was referred to Architect McHenry <br />coincidentally by professors within the Civil and Architectural Engineering departments <br />at the Universities of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. I have also completed one <br />half-hour long telephone conversation with Mr. McHenry. <br />On page 126 of his text, Mr. McHenry states in reference to cement stucco; "It is a <br />durable surface that if properly applied should have a maintenance free life of 10-15 <br />years or more. The stucco surface will remain intact for many years beyond that, <br />although it may develop cracks and need resurfacing. It is not without its <br />
