The Division of Minerals and Geology will be initiating work on the East Pit area of the
GEC Mine sometime between May 15, 2000 and June 7, 2000.
This work will focus on moving the East Pit road from its current location, to a new alignment which crosses
the East Pit lower in the channel, then climbs along the eastern sideslope of the East Pit. It is our hope that
the new alignment will provide a road which is less vulnerable to erosion than is occurring with the existing
alignment. The crossing of the existing East Pit drainage bottom will be an engineered fill with a culvert
eight feet in diameter. The culvert inlets and outlets will be protected with grouted riprap. Some of the
currently existing road material will be used iri this effort. The old cortidor will be graded to ensure positive
drainage, and to eliminate the concentrated runoff and erosion that is currently evident along the existing
corridor.
The road work will take priority, but depending upon the bids received and if sufficient money remains
available, DMG will conduct some grading at the major side slope gully located on the west Flank of the East
Pit to eliminate the steep gully side slopes. All azeas disturbed during this project will be reseeded.
We understand that access through the East Pit must be maintained during the construction project for the
uphill landowner, and to ensure access to the Monarch Mine fan. This will be a requirement of the work
order.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your assistance and
cooperation.
Si
id
Supervisor
Cc: Jim McArdle
John Nelson
Larry Routten
Jim Stark
Bryon Walker
Harry Ranney
