A review of the results and a discussion with field personnel
indicate that the sample results which caused the most concern were not representative of
river water or a seep, but of evaporative residue. Therefore the Superfund Removal Program
will be planning no further activities in this area at this time.
We are reviewing mine permit and other available data, and evaluating the
geochemistry of the pit at the Battle Mountain site. So far our findings indicate that flow from
the pit into the river can be controlled, so that releases will not take place into the river. The
mine continues to monitor this. The location of the southwest tailings impoundment is in a
high, dry location which should minimize the chances of surface or ground water releases.
Monitoring data in this area do not show any impacts from these sources. The sourcewater
protection area for the San Luis drinking water supply does not extend to the mine or the
permit areas. As long as the permit and corrective action process are successful in controlling
releases from the site, Superfund will not be reopening the Site Assessment file. EPA
continues in it's oversight role in the permit programs.
I am planning a field visit with Peter Ismert and Rich Muza in mid-Novemt~er in order to
complete my report to the site file. I hope you will be able to meet with us during my visit.
Please call me at 303-312-6082 to make arrangements for this.
Sincerelyi~
Pat G.
