Pikeview Quarry
Castle Concrete Company
File No. M-77-211
The Pikeview Quarry is located 1 mile northwest of Colorado Springs
f III IIIIIIIII IIII III
999
1 / V `~J 1 v' ~ --
The
quarry was opened up in the 1950's and was operated by Peter Kiewitt & Sons
until 1960. The quarry was the source of aggregate to build the Air Force
Academy .
Castle Concrete Company leased the site in 1969 from Golden Cycle Corporation
and purchased it in 1974. Mining became active again in 1976 and was
permitted in 1977 under the Mined Land Reclamation Act of 1976.
No topsoil was salvaged in the original mining of the site. Little or no
thought was given to reclamation of the site. Of the original 14D acres
permitted, 98 acres was previously disturbed.
Only 2 to 5 acres are mined at one time with another 20 acres devoted to the
processing area. No reclamation of an active mining area can be done until
the area is mined out. The quarry's life is estimated at 70-80 years. At
mid-life (estimated in 1980 at the year 2005), the area will be one-half
reclaimed. The original projection is that the site would be fully mined and
reclaimed by the year 2045.
