R1345
PHONE 13031 ]253]]5
June 25, 1984
Mr. William Beavers, Reclamation Specialist
Mined Land Reclamation Division
Department of Natural Resources
423 Centenial Building
1313 Sherman Street Re: Alexander Pit 76-32
Denver, Colorado, 80203
Dear Mr. Beavers:
Enclosed are maps delineating the plant and pit areas of the Animas
Aggregates operation in the Alexander Pit. We show the total affected
acreage to be 13.83 acres with the permitted acreage to be 14.0 acres.
We believe there are two factors which may give the appearance of a
larger affected acreage:
1. Plateau Inc. leases a 1.0 acre parcle from Alexander which is
adjacent to Animas Aggregates plant area.
2. The San Miguel River as it confluences with the South Fork of
the San Miguel River tends to wander and scour over the entire
area around the pit. The river erodes gravel in some area and
deposits gravel in other areas so as to give the appearance of
a larger sized mining operation.
Animas Aggregates, Inc. has never mined gravel directly from the San
Miguel river or operated machinery in the San Miguel river for the
purpose of mining gravel. The changing course nature of the confluence
of the two rivers may have given the appearance of mining in the river.
The Mined Land Reclamation Board has been provided with an updated surety
in the recommended amount of $20,460.00.
We believe there to be an on site volume of fines and overburden in
excess of 12,000 CY on hand to be used as plant growth medium for
reclamation purposes. Fines or silt in excess of reclamation requirements
are considered product and are sold as such. We intend to submit a
technical revision as soon as possible to show how the fines will be
augmented with the proper proportions of organics and fertilizer to
produce a satisfactory plant growth medium.
Although I have been manager of the Telluride Operation of Animas Aggregates
at the Alexander Pit for several years, I have had no contact with your
division. Please direct correspondence regarding the Alexander Pit to
Box 445, Telluride, Colorado 81435.
