Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
After our phone discussion earlier this week, l checked into our records regarding bond
expenditures at the OC#2 Mine. Records indicate that $19,495.00 was spent on the
regrading and revegetation project in 1996. Currently, we have $16,505.00 left in the
account.
As I had mentioned, we conducted vegetation sampling at the site last summer to
evaluate revegetation success. Over-all vegetation cover was 31.1%, compared to the
approved standard which is 40.5%, so the site did not "pass" the success demonstration
test. On the reclaimed slope areas, cover was only 25.5%, and there was substantial bare
ground (49%). There was a patch of the noxious weed Canada thistle on a portion of the
reclaimed slope. Vegetative cover was higher, with less bare ground in the pond and
stockpile area below the slope.
We anticipate using a portion of the remaining bond to conduct further work at the site to
improve the vegetative stand on the slope, including herbicide treatment of the thistle
infestation, fencing maintenance, and interseeding. The interseeding work will
necessitate extension or reinitiation of the 10 year timeclock.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
~~ __
Daniel athews~
Environmental Protection Specialist
C: Denver File
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation -Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
