Richard D. Lamm
Governor
J
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Dantl H. Getches. Enecutrve Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
DAVIDC. SHELTON, Diroctor
September 26, 1984
Mr. David McMindes
Colorado Yampa Coal Company
P.O. Box 774288
Steamboat Springs, CO 80477
Re: Mass Movement on Area 1; Permit 79-171
Dear Mr. McMindes:
DIVISIO N
The Division has reviewed your letter dated August 9, 1984, regarding
evaluation of possible causes Gf the areas of mass movement on Area 1, and
measures your company's plans to take to stabilize these areas.
While these springs are noted as being outside of the mining area, they are
believed to have occurred as a result of spoils saturation within the mine
area, and, therefore, are directly related to mining. ,
Regrading of the areas is not warranted at this time; however, other
corrective measures :nay be necessary. Your letter stated that, if the slump
areas exhibited saturation on a year-round basis, a rock drain would be
installed. Based upon the Division's field observations, the areas appear to
have been saturated on a year-round basis in 1984. The Division feels that
these areas will continue to exhibit seepage, and long term corrective
measures are necessary to ensure proper drainage and stability. CYCC must
submit a plan for approval, to be implemented in 1985, providing for
dewateriny of these areas. The rock drain proposed in your letter is an
acceptable method; however, more detail is necessary.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me.
Sincerely,

Anne C. 8aldridge
Geologist/Hydrologist
ACB/mad
cc: Sandy Emrich
Doc.
