Request to Add To Specifications for Underdrain
Pioe Bedding Material.
Dear Mr. Keffelew
We discussed today, during Dr. Pendleton's visit, the size distribution of the drain pipe
bedding material in which the three drain pipes are to be bedded. In order to provide road
bed material, Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company ("CC&V") has produced a
more poorly sorted material for pipe bedding which has been screened to remove both the
greater than 3/4 inch and most of the less than 318 inch material. This, fortuitously, results
in a better size distribution for the bedding material.
This bedding material (as well as the road base) is produced from the select granite from the
approved borrow area for underdrain material. That material is now crushed and screened to
produce a "cleaner" product than specified in the current Technical Specifications. The
resulting gradation after screening is similar to the material produced from the Goldstar Pit
for Leak Detection Fill. That gradation specification change was previously approved by the
Office.
This modification to the Underdrain Pipe Backfill specification was discussed with and
verbally accepted by Dr. Pendleton during his July 14, 1994 site inspection. This letter
submits this modification to the Underdrain Pipe Backfill gradation specification and requests
your approval.
Because the intended function of the Underdrain Pipe Backfill is to carry flow and protect the
underdrain pipes, Golder Associates, CC&V's technical consultant, believes that the cleaner
